The Gay and Wondrous Life of Caleb Gallo, a web series from Brian Jordan Alvarez I wrote about a while back, is the best television series I have seen in the last few years.
Each episode is filled with great energy that just doesn’t stop. Coming up on the 2 year anniversary of the project, it still holds up–possibly even getting better with age. And, with the return of Will & Grace, it deserves another look.
People like to compare the series to a modern Will & Grace (funny, given that the modern Will & Grace we got isn’t very modern at all). I disagree. This isn’t just a show about a gay man and his straight female best friend.
It’s more of an ensemble sitcom more like a modern and way less homophobic Friends. Basically, it’s Happy Endings (the closest thing we’ve gotten to a successful, modern Friends) with the queer turned all the way up.
The breakout in all of this has to be the gender-queer Fern, played by Jason Greene. They bring it to the screen and are hard to take your eyes off of.
The entire cast is rather grand, though, each interesting and oddly well-fleshed-out given the short form of it all (it is a YouTube series after all).
The shoe is low-budget, short form, well written and played, and proves that–to quote Fern, “sometimes things that are expensive are worse.” Because this is the beast. Rewatch it if you’ve seen it. If you’ve missed out on it, watch it as soon as you can.
