Maryland Becomes 11th State to Outlaw Gay Conversion Therapy

Maryland has officially become the 11th of the United States of America to outlaw conversion therapy for minors. Conversion therapy is the practice of trying to “rewire” the brain from gay to straight—it often involves electroshock procedures.

Republican Governor Larry Hogan signed the bill, sponsored by Senator Richard Madaleno, prohibiting the practice Tuesday night. Washington, Connecticut, California, Nevada, New Jersey, Oregon, Illinois, Vermont, New York, New Mexico, and Rhode Island are the other 10 states with some sort of a ban.

By the numbers, “20,000 LGBTQ youth currently between the ages of 13 and 17 will receive conversion therapy from a licensed health care professional before they reach 18, and approximately 57,000 will be subjected to the controversial practice from a religious or spiritual adviser.”

Who will win the race to the bottom, and outlast the other states in implementing some form of protction against this abuse? No one knows, but my money is on my home region of America—the good ‘ole Southeast.
